How Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) Works To Reduce Air Pollution in India

What is ETS?
In the state of Gujarat, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) enforces pollution laws and regulations. GPCB sets a cap on the total emission load from all industries.

In India’s War to fight against Air Pollution, GPCB has launched Emission Trading Scheme (ETS).

In ETS there are more than 200+ industries involved which are emitting hazardous gases which are polluting the environment in and around Ahmedabad. ETS interventions are applicable in such a way that the industries who are emitting pollutants above their limit range shall have to purchase environment bonds from the industry which are emitting subsequently less pollutant into the environment. ETS takes advantage of this scheme to better track industry emissions, and in a transparent way.

Industries Involved in ETS

To further lead up into the ETS, reputed environmental monitoring solutions manufacturers have been approached by GPCB to provide appropriate monitoring solutions to the aimed industries.

With activities in India since the 1990’s, ENVEA India Pvt Ltd has delivered and installed hundreds of air pollution monitoring networks, perfectly addressing Indian Government supportive measures and regulations to curb air pollution. Furthermore, through its continuous stack emissions monitoring systems being installed in a huge number of industries across the territory such as: chemical & petrochemical industries, cement plants, metal & paper mills, etc., ENVEA assists their effort to come closer to compliance and meet pollution reduction goals.

Besides these industries, on focus since several years, the textile manufacturing is now under the spotlight.

Textile manufacturing is a vast and immense industry that involves complex processes. It goes through a series of steps like transformation of fiber into yarn, yarn into fabric and so on to end up with the clothing as the final product. In Ahmedabad, there are many small units that carry out only specific individual processes such as spinning, other industries carry out the weaving process and others the dyeing, printing or finishing. These processes are carried out by separate industries.

Solutions Provided by ENVEA

The industries are involved in different types of process in Textile manufacturing. Therefore, there are different types of boilers and filters used. We provide different types of dust monitors according to the needs of each of these industries. As most of the industries are having small diameter stacks around 400 to 900 mm there our model DM 210 is suitable where bag filter, cyclone filter, dust collector are used. In some of the industries wet scrubber is also used there our model DM 210 with Insulated Probe is best suitable offered instrument. Some of the industries are having bigger diameter stacks with filters like ESP, bag filter, cyclone filter, dust collector where we are supplying model DM 170. For the requirement of measuring velocity in the stack we recommend the model Stackflow 200. These instruments have already been supplied to over 70% of the industries involved in the ETS project. To be precise, we have received more than 140 orders for dust monitors and more than 70 orders for flow meters.

Challenges faced during ETS project

The increase in Covid’19 cases and the interstate travel restrictions we faced at the time were the main challenges we faced. Even in those difficult times, we have provided all the support these industries have needed, and even visited some of them.

To address these challenges, we approached the various associations through which the industries are connected. We held meetings at the association offices to guide the industry executives on the technology and how it will meet their needs.

Future Scope of ENVEA

Researchers are partnering with pollution control boards to evaluate the ETS market in industrial areas of the country where textile mills, chemical industries, and other major polluting industries are located. The ETS evaluation leverages an existing development of Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) deployed throughout the country, which send live reports via ENVEA software, capable of providing data to the government in accordance with CPCB guidelines.

ENVEA provides its support and knowledge to the CPCB and the government in the state of Punjab and throughout the country under the ETS program.

It is therefore already clear that it makes economic sense to invest in emission reduction technologies that will reduce pollution and environmental impact. The program aims to reduce the cost of compliance for industries while meeting the state’s air pollution targets.
